I do a lot of government work as an electrician, and for many months now, we’ve been working with a New Jersey township water department. I met a vegan employee there that told me about sprouts and got me intrigued. He let me try some and I was hooked.
Turns out growing sprouts is really fast and easy. They’ll be ready in just five days. You won’t need any fancy equipment. Just a mason jar, a sprouting lid and the sprouting seeds. I already have plenty of mason jars as I always pickle my peppers and many other veggies that I grow in my garden.
When I got home, I did a little bit of research and decided to purchase radish sprouting seeds, as I love the peppery flavor and sharpness of radishes. So, I purchased the Rainbow Radish Sprouting Seeds Mix from Amazon. My DPW friend had a $5.00 coupon for a one-pound bag of seeds off my order to use with Amazon and that worked out well.
I also ordered a one-pound bag of a 5 Part Salad Mix Sprouting Seeds from Handy Pantry through True Leaf Market. These had Alfalfa, Radish, Mung Bean, Lentil and Broccoli seeds.
The other thing I ordered was the sprouting lids. You get two of them for about 10 bucks.
Well, in five days, I had this………………….
INSTRUCTIONS
- In a mason jar, add two teaspoons of the seeds.
- Cover the sprouting seeds with fresh, cool water and let soak for at least 8 hours or overnight.
- In the morning, drain and rinse the sprouts with fresh, cool water again. Drain again and shake out most of the water through the sprouting lid. Turn the jar on its side and spin as the seeds stick to the sides of the jar. Store the jar on its side until you’re ready to rinse and drain again.
- Repeat the rinsing and draining process at least two to three times per day.
- Continue to do this for five days.
- At the end of the fifth day, remove the sprouts from the jar and transfer them into a bowl lined with paper towels. Cover with another paper towel and try to remove as much water as possible.
- The best place to store the sprouts is in the refrigerator inside a covered container with paper towels.
- Do not attempt to store the sprouts in the refrigerator if they are too wet.
Enjoy, topped on your favorite meal, salad or sandwich.
Well, you can’t go wrong if you make them this way. Please let me know what you think and if you have any questions.
